How to Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone (Including Similar Shots iOS Misses)

Duplicates sneak into every photo library: burst shots, WhatsApp re-saves, edited copies, that group photo you took eight times so everyone’s eyes would be open. They’re the least painful thing to delete — you lose nothing — and one of the biggest storage wins.

Exact duplicates: use the built-in Duplicates album

iOS finds true copies on its own:

1. Open Photos → Albums, scroll to Utilities → Duplicates.
2. Review each pair and tap Merge — iOS keeps the highest-quality version and moves the rest to Recently Deleted.

Similar photos: the ones iOS doesn’t flag

Most “duplicates” in a real library aren’t exact copies — they’re similar photos: five sunsets from the same balcony, a burst of a jumping kid, three angles of the same plate of pasta. The Duplicates album ignores these, because technically each file is unique.
